A cool new synth-word from your neighbourhood-friendly wordsmith-cum-a cappellian:
A Cappellation (derived from the archaic English word “Appellation”, denoting an identifying name or title or designation.): Noun, referring to the act of naming an a cappella group or a cappella event. Example: “The a cappellation of Aka A Cappella occurred quite by accident, during a phone conversation between its founder Andy Quek and fellow a cappella enthusiast Angelina Choo.”
Verb: to a cappellate (which can also refer to tardiness for an a cappella practice or event =p).
Sounds almost as corny as Aka A Cappella =p
Anyway, on to the diary bit…
24 Sep: Went to catch the Urban Harmony Singers @ NUS in LT13. Got slight lost along the way (overshot past CFA and wound up near the UCC on the wrong side of Kent Ridge) and had to backtrack via Shuttle service B. Once in familiar Arts Fac territory, found way to LT13 easily enough, although was somewhat acappellate and Yosh was there way before me.
UHS were ok though not brilliant. On a 1-10 I’d give them 6.5. Ok lar, since I think they’re primarily was demo (as opposed to gig-getting) group. Also LT13’s less-than-pro sound system and non-a cappella trained sound technicians contributed to the technical gaps. But overall an enjoyable (and free!) performance.
Post-performance was quite productive, AFUA-wise. Managed to speak to Angie and tell her about deTrash and our search for young groups, which she happily agreed to help source for. Also bumped in Gail and Davina of Resonance and told them of upcoming gig. Spoke with Yosh and Davina (mainly Davina) for a about half an hour outside LT13, catching up on local a cappella happenings and gossip. Also got Resonance’s contact so I can (and should) get ing soon! deTrash awaits!
After Davina left met up with Claire to discuss the long overdue Maids article. Yosh came along too, and turned out Yosh and Claire knew each other. Small world (well, small country more like.) Adjourned to canteen for Claire to get lunch. The three of us talked about Stuff—Singapore, future, politics, religion, beliefs and Belief—invigorating conversation. David the Passionately Animated Idealistic Cynic made a guest appearance (but we were discussing politics, which is his pet subject, so obviously he came out). End result: conversation--2+ hours, time spent discussing maid essay—1/2 hour, and only after Yosh left for Jap class. Oh well, it is always the diversions that are more fun.
Would like to crash NUS more often, if nothing else cos it’s at least slightly more intellectual than an army camp, but pretty hard to manage since my workplace is across the island.
Foyle Young Poets:
CAPpers win Foyle Young Poets Award! (again!!!)
Arguably the only peers I hold in greater regard than genuine (as opposed to fake or fluke) PSC scholars are genuine top-notch poets. Congrats to Nicholas and Judith! No I don’t know them personally but have heard of them. (no great feat in Singapore’s small arts & literary scene)
Yay! Glad to see CAP is still churning out award-winning poets every year (no thanks to me…). It’s been an unbroken run of Young Poet winners every year…go CAP! Wohoo!
