TOP OF THE NEWS IN INDIA: Gandhi abandons PM bid

Brought to you by Where Worlds Collide, keeping tabs on world politics 24/7 =p...

Wth, if you'd managed to whoop the opposition by the seat of your electorial pants, would you decline the post of PM? The TV news feed gives a more compelling image of a country in turmoil after its beloved leader is perceived to have "spurned" her people's mandate, with even Indian news commentators caught in tears, apparently unable to dry them fast enough before the "on air" switch kicked in. It takes great strength of character to do what Sonia Gandhi's doing. But I don't envy her position right now.

(Damn there are times I love my job. Such as when I know things 2 hours ahead of everyone else. Am self-confessed incorrigible news addict! =p)

Sonia Gandhi has withdrawn her name for consideration as India's next prime minister.

"I must humbly decline this post," she told a meeting of Congress party lawmakers, who reacted angrily to her decision.

"I request you to accept my decision and to recognise that I will not reverse it," she said, fighting to make herself heard above indignant shouts from her supporters in the central hall of Parliament.

"It is my inner voice, my conscience," she said.

Party sources said Gandhi has endorsed party official and former finance minister Manmohan Singh for the post.

Singh had been expected to serve again as finance minister. He was the architect of India's economic liberalization program during the last Congress-led government in the 1990s.
