Ah-Bud(ak) then?

Well, last night’s Budak Sound-alike concert concert/competition @ Blue Moo totally ROCKED. Who’d have thought a humble bunch of a cappella-lovin’ Singaporean guys would endure for 10 years, spawning their own generation of imitators in their wake? Heart was strangely warmed by the kudos and (musical) trips down memory lane as Budak had fun celebrating their 10th anniversary (with typically bad old-age jokes along the way).

Took notes during the sound-alike competition (being the pro-wannabe that I am) but don’t think they’re terribly relevant here. Of note were the groups Le Raggazzi (comprising my seniors from VJChoir), Dischordant (juniors from RJChorale), and Bacon (juniors from VJChoir). Dischordant amused us too with Akatone-esque free post-competition performance at an unused stairwell.

In related news, Sheesh! turned up in all but full strength @ Blue Moo last night (only lacking Wyman due to sudden sickness), prompting me (ever the slave-driving leader) to joke more than once that “we should be having pracs NOW! Not watching this thing!” Now that I estimate we have a genuine shot at reaching stage-acceptable standards by April, will be pushing for regular pracs. Maybe we can even snag a few gigs before this year is out…

Anyway, am trying to figure out how to use ClubPhoto.com to put my photos there. So they’ll be up, sooner rather than later if I’m free.

Where the Stress falls

Am left in the (literary) dust of Susan Sontag’s book of essays Where the Stress Falls. I haven’t read/watched practically all of the books/films/dances that she writes about. So why do I continue reading it? Mainly cos I still feel I’m learning something from her criticisms. Sure, I haven’t read Tsvetaeva, Wescott and countless other lesser-known saints of the literary canon, but when Sontag discusses the works with reference to literary, social and artistic theories/schools of thought, that is something I can understand, and learn from.

Of course, I must get round to reading the referenced books sometime in the next year or two. After that, I’ll revisit Stress and learn a bit more from Sontag.
