1984+20 (=2004?)
re-reading 1984 on behalf of a junior, and am struck again at how alike SG and Oceania are. (For a start they're both fierce meritocracies, rely on a large labour-caste, have a rather powerful Inner Party, and are based on multiple contradictory concepts existing at once--MiniLuv's Ignorance is Strength in Oceania==>MHA's Democracy wielded with Control in SG).
Then again Orwell wasn't writing about SG. He was writing about the future (or potential future--thankfully it hasn't fully come to pass yet in SG or anywhere else) of politics in general. In fact many nations are becoming increasingly Oceania-ified before our eyes, just read the news. The (Ingsoc) writing's on the telescreen, comrade 6079W.
1984: Orwell was wrong about the exact date, but he may well be right about almost everything else.
Well, unless my generations's got anything to say about it.
